Mission Statement

In support of Rockport’s Thacher and Straitsmouth Islands Town Committee, the Thacher & Straitsmouth Islands Association is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that is dedicated to the historic preservation and operation of these two remarkable landmarks located just off Rockport’s coast. Cape Ann Light Station Thacher Island, a National Historic Landmark, and Straitsmouth Island Light, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, hold unique places in history. TSIA raises funds and organizes special events all in an effort to preserve these exceptional sites, while facilitating visitors’ enjoyment of their scenic, natural, and cultural benefits.

We depend upon membership dues, grants, and donations to provide the funds to:

  • Make visits to the islands possible
  • Restore and maintain the historic structures, including three lighthouses, three keeper houses, a tramway and a whistle house
  • Improve and maintain the scenic trails, picnic and camping areas
  • Plant native species to encourage more birds, bees, and butterflies
  • Preserve the islands' unique historic and natural attributes

In addition, many TSIA members provide volunteer labor to assist the Town Committee in its mission to manage and maintain the islands.
